USC's chapter of the Association of Computing Machinery (ACM) will be hosting its first Fix-IT day at the Swearingen Engineering Center on Saturday. From noon to 6 p.m., students of the College of Engineering will be offering free diagnostic and repair services for laptops and desktops using Mac OS, Windows and Linux.

This repair event is open to students and faculty of USC and the general public. While ACM participates in community service and free tutoring for students in introductory computing classes throughout the year, this is the student group's first large-scale community outreach event.

According to third-year computer science student Mark Williams, president of the ACM at USC, volunteers at Fix-IT day will be offering quicker repairs and a wider range of services than University Technology Services, including installing new operating systems, updating software, replacing LCD panels and removing viruses, malware and spyware. While ACM cannot cover the cost of hardware, they can help install it if the proper devices are brought with the computer.

Williams states that some of the most common computer problems for students are spyware and other viruses, incompatibility between programs and having a cluttered hard drive. ACM's vice-president, third-year computer science student Chase Daigle, says that students also need to be careful with the way they handle their computers. Hardware problems occur when laptops are jostled around in students' book bags, Daigle said.

With at least a dozen volunteers available throughout the day, ACM anticipates that students won't have to wait long for assistance. In the meantime, Daigle offers some suggestions for minimizing computer troubles.

"It is important to keep your system up-to-date," Daigle said. "When the developers hear about security holes, they develop patches for the software, and these patches are distributed in software updates. Regardless of the operating system you run, be it Windows, Mac OS, Linux, or something else, keeping your system current will help to protect you from software vulnerabilities."

Williams said he is looking forward to a good student turnout on Saturday. He knows very well the importance of maintaining a healthy operating system.

"Taking care of your computer will keep it from breaking down on you at 3 a.m. when you have a paper due at 8 a.m."

Fcc Offering Computer Broadband Speed

In a rare effort Fedzilla (federal government) has released a service that is beneficial. It is an accurate broadband speed test for your Internet connection. The service is offered, but not endorsed (per website legal), for demographic measurement of the population.

The FCC is acquiring a survey of Internet broadband speeds throughout the country. The FCC has made a gargantuan proposal for broadband deployment throughout the United States. The gathered information is theoretically for inventorying the current national state of broadband. The FCC barely mentions the proposal is supported via a new tax they are pursuing .

Over the past six weeks our broadband connectivity was sluggish and it almost took an act of Congress to get our provider to look into it. Somehow I don’t think Fedzilla is capable of fixing is the ISP’s reliability. This is another issue for another day.

During our slug speed we checked a number of broadband speed tests and the winner is the FCC. Other contenders included SpeakEasy, SpeedTest, Verizon, and Charter. The attributes of the contenders were so inaccurate they don’t come close. Speedtest.net is a joke as it comes down to the speed of the server. We tested the speed with over five servers and in each case the speeds varied from 6 mbps to 16 mbps. Seems a bit ironic considering the domain name is “speedtest.net.”

The other contenders tests were so outdated they either didn’t display speeds past 10 mbps or were not programmed to go beyond a speed that was way lower than our ceiling speed of 25 down and three up.

In the end the FCC site rocks for a real-world measurement of your Internet connection. Get on your computer and measure your speed. It will provide you the ammunition necessary to start on the repair of your broadband connection.

Well, now the PC maker’s had time to think the matter through, another page has appeared on the Dell website, condensing the whole Windows vs Ubuntu debate into about 100 words.

From Dell’s perspective the choice is clear. You should choose Windows if (and I swear I’m not paraphrasing here):

You are already using WINDOWS programs (e.g. Microsoft Office, iTunes etc) and want to continue using them

You are familiar with WINDOWS and do not want to learn new programs for email, word processing etc

You are new to using computers

And you should plump for Ubuntu if:

You do not plan to use Microsoft WINDOWS

You are interested in open source programming

So, just to get this highly complex argument straight: you should use Windows if you’ve already used Windows or have never used Windows. And you should only think about Ubuntu if you’re an open-source programmer. Got it?

The Windows Genuine Advantage antipiracy system in the Windows 7 Ultimate release to manufacturers (RTM) has been compromised by hackers.

This means the user can fully activate the software offline without connecting to Microsoft's activation server. The software's RTM code is usually the same as the retail code, which will be available to the public in October. Hackers must have used the leaked ISO file to get hold of the activation certificate that Microsoft digitally signed for the original equipment manufacturer (OEM) version of Windows 7. An OEM activation key will unlock multiple copies and it is rumored that this particular key will work on machines from Dell, Hewlett-Packard or Lenovo.

Addressing this, Microsoft released its statement, "We are aware of reports of activation exploits that attempt to circumvent activation and validation in Windows 7, and we can assure customers that Microsoft is committed to protecting them from counterfeit and pirated software." A personal computer is on everybody's checklist and or definitely on their wish list. Be it parents' buying for their children or much older citizens realizing that the PC can be the best way to stay in touch with their kids and watch their grandchildren grow up.

Most new users who have not 'learnt' computers or studied it in school have a very tentative approach to the computer. They really could do with computer help on a regular basis. As an octogenarian aunt who is reinventing herself via the Personal Computer mentioned to me that it would be wonderful to have computer services that were tailor made for her needs. When I asked her what she meant by that she said that what she needed was help with her PC so that she did not need worry about computer virus and other such nasty things. Computer Help that worked on auto pilot, so to speak rather than having to get in touch with a computer help specialist all the time. She just wanted a computer service professional to check her system regularly and maybe teach her a new trick or two every now and then! All computers regardless of brand come with help tutorials inbuilt into the system. I will admit that there are designed with care and are very easy to follow. In Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2), both the wired and wireless connections are handled by the Wireless Zero Configuration service (WZCSVC), and this service is always running. As part of Network Access Protection (NAP) integration in Windows XP SP3, this WZCSVC functionality is divided into two separate services:

The WZCSVC
The Wired AutoConfig service (DOT3SVC)

The WZCSVC in Windows XP SP3 manages only the wireless connections. The DOT3SVC manages the wired connections, and it displays the Authentication tab in the properties dialog box of the wired network adapter. However, in Windows XP SP3, the startup type of the DOT3SVC is configured as manual. Therefore, the Authentication tab is missing until you manually start the DOT3SVC.

Windows supports several Safe Boot options that load a minimal set of drivers. You can use these options to start Windows so that you can modify the registry or load or remove drivers.

Follow these steps to use a Safe Boot option

1. Restart your computer, and when the Boot menu appears, press F8.

Description of Safe Boot Options

Safe Mode (Safeboot_Option=Minimal): A minimal set of device drivers and services to start Windows.

?A black exclamation point (!) on a yellow field indicates the device is in a problem state. Note that a device that is in a problem state can be functioning.
?A problem code explaining the problem is displayed for the device.
?A red "X" indicates a disabled device. A disabled device is a device that is physically present in the computer and is consuming resources, but does not have a protected-mode driver loaded.
? A blue "i" on a white field on a device resource in Computer properties indicates that the Use automatic settings feature is not selected for the device and that the resource was manually selected. Note that this does not indicate a problem or disabled state.

?A green question mark "?" in Device Manager means that a compatible driver for this device is installed, indicating the possibility that all of the functionality may not be available. Note that this applies only to Windows Millennium Edition (Me).

NOTE : Some sound cards and video adapters do not report all of the resources that they use to Windows. This can cause Device Manager to show only one device in conflict, or no conflicts at all. This can be verified by disabling the sound card, or by using the standard VGA video driver to see if the conflict is resolved. Note that this is a known problem with S3 video adapters and 16-bit Sound Blaster sound cards, or those sound cards that are using Sound Blaster emulation for Sound Blaster compatibility.

There are a finite number of resources that are available for a computer's CPU. Windows manages these resources automatically, and can allocate tasks between processors or manage multiple processes on a single processor. You can adjust how Windows manages these resources by prioritizing them between the foreground programs and the background services.

By default, Windows puts a priority on the foreground programs. The added processing resources cause programs to respond more quickly. However, if you have background services, such as printing or disk backup that run while you work and you want them to respond faster, you can have Windows share processor resources equally between background and foreground programs.

Note If you are using your Windows XP computer as a server, allocating more resources to background services is recommended.

To manually change the performance of foreground and background programs, complete these steps:

1. Click Start, click Run, type sysdm.cpl in the Open box, and then press ENTER to open the System Properties dialog box.
2. Click the Advanced tab, and then under Performance click Settings.
3. Click the Advanced tab, and then under Processor scheduling use one of the following methods:

Boot Log XP lets you search for troubleshooting Windows boot-up problems in Windows XP. Windows has the option of creating a boot log, which regards numerous fine points of the startup process. This can be extremely valuable in various kinds of troubleshooting and system analysis.

TO GENERATE A BOOT LOG ON A GIVEN OCCASION, bring up the Boot Menu during startup, select Option 2 (to create a boot log), then let Windows continue its startup. The file BOOTLOG.TXT is created in the root folder of the C: partition. If a boot log already exists, the old one is first backed up to a file named C:\BOOTLOG.PRV (for “previous”).

But is it possible to have a new boot log automatically generated every time you restart Windows? Yes it is — you just need to know the trick. (A tip of the hat to MS-MVP Sky King, who provided a critical clue in initially figuring all this out.)

You have to edit the C:\MSDOS.SYS file on your computer.

MSDOS.SYS is a hidden, read-only, system file, so, before you can edit it, you have to change its attributes to read-write. To do this, right-click on its icon in Explorer, select Properties, and remove the checkmark from in front of “Read-Only.” When you are through with all of your edits and changes in MSDOS.SYS (as described below), reverse the process and make sure that the read-only, hidden, and system boxes are all checked.

Though the changes suggested below are pretty innocent, if you are not familiar with editing MSDOS.SYS you might want to back it up first. Just copy it somewhere else. This saves a lot of headache if things go wrong.

Edit MSDOS.SYS with Notepad, the MS-DOS Edit program, or another editor. (TIP: I have all .SYS files set up to open automatically with Notepad — meaning I can actually just type MSDOS.SYS in a Run box and have it open. This never gets in my way. If you want to do the same thing, just click on the file’s icon, check the box to always open it with the same program, and pick Notepad from the list. Otherwise, if you don’t want to make this permanent association change, just launch the Notepad program and use Open to open MSDOS.SYS.)

Once inside of MSDOS.SYS, there is one very important practical thing to note. You will see rows of X’s. Do not disturb these! They are there for a very important reason. The file must be at least a certain minimum size, or it will not be able to do its job right. You can edit things above and below the X’s, but don’t mess with the X’s themselves.

ADD THE FOUR LINES GIVEN BELOW TO MSDOS.SYS. You can just add them to the bottom if you want; or, if other versions of some of these lines exist earlier, you can edit those, or add these lines next to them, or delete the earlier version and add these at the bottom. I do not think it matters one way or the other for any of them. Here are the lines:

BootMenu=1
BootMenuDefault=2
BootMenuDelay=1
DisableLog=0

Line 1 guarantees that the Boot Menu comes up every time. Line 2 says the Boot Menu should always take option 2, which is to create a boot log. Line 4 may not be needed, but was recommended, and may be needed on some systems according to some people’s reports (or it may just be a precaution in case you had a DisableLog=1 that you missed earlier in the file). It disables the disabling of the boot log.

Line 3 is the key one, and has advantages and disadvantages. I could not get the forced selecting of option 2 to work until I guaranteed that the Boot Menu was “up” for some period of time. BootMenuDelay=1 says that the Boot Menu will appear and wait for 1 second. This is the minimum. I set it at the minimum so it would not slow down my startup. You have to have at least 1 second here. But the disadvantage is that, if you want to manually bring up the Boot Menu for some other reason, you only have 1 second to pick the right number when the menu pops up, and that usually is not enough time. So you might want to set it a little higher, say, at 5 seconds, or whatever you want — just knowing that this adds 5 seconds to your startup time.

All of the above, also, will slightly slow down startup. Again, we are talking only a few seconds. I believe this is only true when a BOOTLOG.TXT or BOOTLOG.PRV already exists, and the slowdown is not in the forming of the boot log, but in the brief processes of deleting the existing .PRV file and backing up the existing BOOTLOG.TXT file before opening the new boot log.

While it is prudent to assume that these were pulled from the current set for good cause — due to some problem — it is also true that many computers had no problems with these. ISO Image Burner - (New, December 2001. Withdrawn January 2002.) As mentioned above, I’m not the one to ask about this; but a lot of people have been waiting for this one! Burn ISO images to a CD-ROM burner. Since this one has been withdrawn, a very popular recommendation is Alex Feinman’s ISO recorder, available here .

Shell Media Player - (New, December 2001. Withdrawn January 2002.) Play music from the desktop taskbar. After executing the install file, right click your desktop taskbar, click on Toolbars, and click Audio Player. You should see four buttons, one green and three blue. If you do not see these, then you need to resize the Audio Player portion of the taskbar. (You may need to unlock the taskbar to do this: Right-click on it to get this option.) 3. Start Regedt32.exe.

6. On the Security menu, click Permissions.
7. Verify that Administrators have full control. Change this back when you are finished with these steps.
8. Quit Regedt32.exe, and then start Regedit.exe.
9. Locate the following registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\MountedDevices
10. Find the drive letter you want to change to (new). Look for "\DosDevices\C:".
11. Right-click \DosDevices\C:, and then click Rename.

Note You must use Regedit instead of Regedt32 to rename this registry key.
12. Rename it to an unused drive letter "\DosDevices\Z:".

This frees up drive letter C.
13. Find the drive letter you want changed. Look for "\DosDevices\D:".
14. Right-click \DosDevices\D:, and then click Rename.
15. Rename it to the appropriate (new) drive letter "\DosDevices\C:".
16. Click the value for \DosDevices\Z:, click Rename, and then name it back to "\DosDevices\D:".
17. Quit Regedit, and then start Regedt32.
18. Change the permissions back to the previous setting for Administrators (this should probably be Read Only).
19. Restart the computer.

This post describes how to recover a Windows XP system that does not start because of corruption in the registry. This procedure does not guarantee full recovery of the system to a previous state; however, you should be able to recover data when you use this procedure.

Warning Do not use the procedure that is described in this post if your computer has an OEM-installed operating system. The system hive on OEM installations creates passwords and user accounts that did not exist previously. If you use the procedure that is described in this post, you may not be able to log back into the recovery console to restore the original registry hives.

Note Make sure to replace all five of the registry hives. If you only replace a single hive or two, this can cause potential issues because software and hardware may have settings in multiple locations in the registry.

When your computer does not have sufficient disk space for temporary files, you may notice unpredictable behavior in Access 2003. You must remove the old temporary files on your system periodically. After you remove the old temporary files, make sure that there is at least 8 megabytes (MB) to 10 MB of free space on your disk. Make sure that the free space is available to your temporary (Temp) folder.

You must determine the location of your Temp folder. You must verify the validity of your TMP environment variables and your TEMP environment variables. To do this, follow these steps:

1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
2. In Control Panel, double-click System.
3. On the Advanced tab, click Environment Variables.

Check whether the User Variables for list contains valid settings for the TMP environment variable and for the TEMP environment variable.

The following example shows valid settings:
TEMP = C:\TEMP
TMP = C:\TEMP

3. If the TMP environment variable and the TEMP environment variable are not defined, you must create valid environment variables. To do this, follow these steps:
1. In the Environment Variables dialog box, click New under the User variables for section.
2. In the New User Variable dialog box, type TEMP in the Variable Name box.
3. In the Variable Value box, type C:\Temp (or any other valid path and valid folder name).
4. Click OK to add these values to the User Variables for list.
5. Repeat step a through step c to create the TMP environment variable.

6. Exit Control Panel.
7. Start Microsoft Windows Explorer.
8. Locate the folder that is specified in the TMP environment variable and in the TEMP environment variable.

Note A TEMP environment variable setting that is not valid may have serious effects on Access 2003. Therefore, if you notice that the folder that is specified in the environment variable setting does not exist, you must either open Windows Explorer and then create a new temp folder in the specified location, or you must repeat step 1 through step 3 to update the environment variables to a valid location.

9. Verify that the drive that contains the TEMP folder has sufficient free disk space.

Note Make sure that the free disk space that is available on the drive where the TEMP folder is located is at least two times the size of the largest database that you may potentially open on your computer.

For example, if your largest Access database file is 7 MB, make sure that the drive where the TEMP folder resides has at least 14 MB of free disk space.

10. Verify that the TEMP folder is empty.

If files exist in the TEMP folder, you can delete the .tmp files that are currently not in use. The .tmp files typically have a modified date that is earlier than the current session of Windows.

Note Microsoft recommends that you exit all Windows programs before you delete the .tmp files.

In the Maintenance dialog box, click the Store Folder button.
In the Store Location dialog box, right-click Your personal message store is located in the following folder, and then click Select All.

When you select the strings, right-click Your personal message store is located in the following folder, and then click Copy.
Click Cancel or Close to close all the dialog boxes.
Close Windows Mail.

Right-click the Start Search box, and click Paste and then press ENTER.

In the opened folder, right-click the WindowsMail.MSMessageStore file, and then press DELETE.

Open the Backup folder and the New folder.

Press CTRL+A to select all files, and then press DELETE.

Close all folders.

Start Windows Mail to rebuild the message store database.
After you restart Windows Mail, the message store file is sucessfully repaired.

Note: If you receive the following error message, and the WindowsMail.MSMessageStore file cannot be deleted, start Windows Vista in safe mode and use Method 1 to delete the file: The action can't be completed because the file is open in another program. Close the file and try again.
Step 3: Rebuild Windows Mail folder

If rebuilding the database does not resolve the issue, follow these steps to rebuild the Windows Mail folder:

Close Windows Mail.

Confirm and copy Store Location of Windows Mail. To confirm Store Location, see Step 1 in “Method 1: Rebuild the message store of Windows Mail” that described above.

Click Start and paste the location path that found in Store Location of Windows Mail, place the cursor at the end of the pasted strings, and then press the Backspace key to delete the following strings.

Notice that the default Windows Mail folder is located in C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\Microsoft\WindowsMail
Press Enter and open the folder.
Right-click the Windows Mail folder, and then click Rename.
Input old at the end of the folder name and change the folder name as below

Start Windows Mail, confirm the Windows Mail folder is automatically created, and then close Windows Mail.

Note If new Windows Mail folder is compressed, you need to uncompress this folder.

Double-click the Windows Mailold folder used in Step 6 and open the folder.

Dump files are created when an error occurs for which there is additional information that would be useful in diagnosing a problem (such as internal control blocks). Every data item written to the dump files has a timestamp associated with it to help with problem determination. Dump files are in binary format and are intended for DB2(R) customer support representatives.

Test drive: Windows 7 on a Netbook Computer

Still semijetlagged from Las Vegas, one of the very first items on our to-do list was to install the now widely available Windows 7 beta on a Netbook.

From off-the-record conversations with PC makers during CES, we heard that Windows 7 played well with systems motorized by Intel's Atom CPU--which is something we generally can't say about Vista. (Although it's also worth noting that Vista, while making for a somewhat sluggish user experience, actually performed reasonably well in benchmark testing on Sony's new Vaio Lifestyle PC minilaptop, which combines an Atom with a more appropriate 2GB of RAM.)

We quickly installed the 32-bit version of Windows 7 on a typical Netbook. The installation went smoothly, and the OS seemed to run well at first glance, but our wireless card wasn't detected initially. We eventually got that sorted out, and ran our iTunes benchmark test for a quick speed comparison (our test system had an Intel Atom CPU, 1GB of RAM, and an 80GB 5,400rpm HDD).

As the iTunes test is CPU focused, we weren't totally surprised to find similar scores, with XP completing the test in 743 seconds, and both Vista (with graphics options set for Vista Basic) and the Windows 7 beta hitting 760 seconds. (Note: lower scores indicate better results.)
While our quick benchmark testing did not show a Win 7 advantage, we can say that in anecdotal use, the Windows 7 interface responded quicker and hung less frequently than Vista, where just opening the Start Menu or My Documents folder can be a slog. We're cooking up some additional tests right now, and will report their results shortly.

It remains to be seen if Windows 7 is really a viable candidate for Netbooks (although Microsoft is purportedly working on a Netbook-specific build of the new OS), but if it is, this may finally give Microsoft the excuse it needs to retire the long-serving XP operating system. That's how I feel when I check my investments these days. Horrified, shocked, appalled, doomed. I'm not alone, of course. Everyone else I know feels pretty much the same.

Acute anxiety over the economy makes it tough to part with whatever funds you still have. Still, laptops are impervious to your financial woes. When they feel like misbehaving, crashing, or expiring completely, they do it. You're left to figure out the least expensive solution: Repair the laptop or buy a new one?

What's the Problem?

Before you take action on an ailing laptop, find out exactly what the problem is. Sometimes a little common-sense deductive logic will uncover the issue.

If you can't figure out the problem, ask a tech-savvy friend or relative, or an IT person at work, for their opinion. Otherwise, you may need to take the computer to a repair shop for an estimate. The diagnosis may cost you US$50 to $70 or so, depending upon the shop, where you live, and so on. Some repair shops will waive the diagnostic fee if they make the repairs.

NASA has delayed plans to launch a repair mission to the Hubble Space Telescope because an onboard computer stopped working over the weekend, officials said today.

The mission, planned for launch Oct. 14, is postponed until at least early next year. In the meantime, the telescope is unable to transmit any science data to the ground.

Engineers at the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt are working this week to transfer the work of Hubble's science data downlink computer repair to a backup system. But the backup has not been tested since Hubble was launched in 1990, and it's uncertain whether the transfer will work, said Susan Hendrix, a spokeswoman for the Hubble program at the Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt.

In either case, NASA officials said, the launch will have to be delayed while engineers assess the problems, test replacement parts and plan for possible attempts to repair or replace the computer.

That will come as an acute disappointment for hundreds of scientists and engineers in Maryland who work with Hubble at Goddard or at the Space Telescope Science Institute in Baltimore.

Hendrix said the problem arose just after 8 p.m. Saturday when "Side A" of the telescope's scientific data downlink computer -- called the Control Unit/Science Data Formatter -- experienced what Hendrix called a "hardware failure."

The telescope went into a "safing" mode, which shut down the scientific instruments.

Side A of the computer has been operating reliably since the observatory was launched in 1990.

"There is a Side B, and they're looking at transitioning to Side B," she said. That would restore the telescope's science observations and downlinks. But the backup hardware hasn't been switched on in more than 18 years in space, and engineers aren't certain it will work.

The changeover requires completing a "transition flight readiness review," and switching five other related devices over to Side B, Hendrix said. And that takes time.

"They're hoping to know something by the end of the week if they can bring up Side B," she said.

NASA was planning for an Oct. 14 launch of the space shuttle Atlantis on a mission to upgrade and repair the observatory.

The long-awaited servicing mission is to be the final visit by astronauts to the orbiting telescope. Their goal is to extend its working life at least another five years, and to expand its power.

The astronauts' work list already includes replacement of batteries and gyroscopes, the installation of two new scientific instruments, and attempts to repair two other instruments that have broken down since the last servicing mission in 2002.

Seven astronauts have been training for more than a year for the $900 million repair mission, and engineers at Goddard have designed more than 150 new tools for the four spacewalkers to use.

Now mission planners will have to decide whether to ask astronauts to attempt to replace the failed computer and restore its redundancy by installing a backup currently in storage on the ground.

If they do, it will require additional testing, planning and training time. NASA already has scheduled five seven-hour spacewalks for astronauts to make a list of repairs and upgrades.

tonight's hidden camera investigation, investigative reporter Amy Davis took a desktop computer to one repair shop after another to find out who's repairing your computer and who's just cleaning out your wallet.Dan Wallach tinkers and teaches at Rice University's Computer Security Lab as an associate professor; but when it comes to computers you might call him "Nerd, geek, something like that," Wallach said, finishing the sentence.To family and friends, Wallach is "Mr. Fix-it," but we asked him to fix our computer so it would not work."I'm just gonna put it on kind of half-hazard," said Wallach pulling on a cable to the hard drive.We took the computer in for repairs all over the Houston area to find out one thing."I'd like to know if you could tell me what's wrong with it," Davis asked a technician with a hidden camera rolling."Just like I don't really know how to fix a car, a whole lot of people don't really know how to fix a computer," Wallach said.College junior George Morrison is one of those people."It was running a little slow," Morrison said about his laptop. "I was worried it was our Internet connection."Morrison took his laptop in for a check-up. When he got it back, it wouldn't boot up at all."We rely on the people who do that not to rip us off," Morrison said.So, what would computer technicians tell us?We called on five companies, using BBB complaints to select the businesses.We made appointments for two companies to come to the house. But, first we took our computer to Best Buy's Geek Squad and Circuit City's Firedog."It just stopped booting up right," our employee explained to the technician behind the counter.Remember -- we know what's wrong. The computer won't boot up because we loosened the cable to the computer's hard drive."The fix for this computer is easy. Push it back in," Wallach said.Back at Best Buy, it took a Geek Squad tech 36 minutes to properly diagnose the problem. He did it while I waited and for no charge.At Circuit City's Firedog, it wasn't that fast and it wasn't free."It's $59.99," the Firedog technician told our employee."$59.99, just do to a diagnostic?" the employee asked."Yes, ma'am," he replied."I mean, if you turn it on, you'll see what it's doing," the KPRC employee said. "That might tell you right away what the problem is." "Well, I mean, it'll show me what the problem is, but you know it could be a hard drive, it could be a mother board, it could be different types of things," the technician said.So, we left the computer overnight. Firedog called us the next day. Technicians found and fixed the loose cable by pushing it in. With tax, it cost us just under $65.Skypot Computer Center on Bissonnet checked out our computer for free.An employee wrote out what it would cost us to fix it -- $269.95 was Skypot’s cost to install a new operating system.When we went back to the store to talk with the tech about the diagnosis, he hid in the back and refused to come out and talk.The store's owner sent us a letter, saying his shop would never have made the recommendation we got in writing. He even doubts we took the computer to his business, even though it's all on camera. You can read the letter in its entirety by clicking here.We scheduled a house call with The Computer Clinic in Katy so we could see exactly how the tech diagnosed our problem.In 10 minutes, without ever removing the computer's cover, he told us this."So it looks like your drive is probably … looks like it's gone," said The Computer Clinic tech on hidden camera."So what do you recommend?" the KPRC employee asked him."I would recommend that we put an operating system on here so you can get it running," the technician said.The diagnosis cost us $70. The tech told us the new operating system would come to $243.63."Did you ever think about checking any cables? Maybe it's just a loose cable," Davis asked the technician on his way out of the house."Uh, we didn't. I didn't look in there because I figured whenever it says there's nothing coming up, that's it. Unless maybe it does. I can look at it right now," the repairman offered.The Computer Clinic said they would have noticed the loose cable once they got our computer to the shop. They said we wouldn't have been charged for the operating system we didn't need.The computer technician for Bits & Bytes was in the house for just four minutes when he spotted the problem."So far from what I’ve seen, the hard drive cable here wasn't pushed down all the way," said technician Derrek Labrosse.Bits & Bytes charges by the hour. Our repair cost us $81."Well, it's an hour, so if you want me to stick around," Labrosse offered.So how do you know who to trust? Just like shopping for a car mechanic, you have to shop around.Check complaints with the Better Business Bureau and make sure you tell the shop not to do any work until you approve the charges.If the diagnosis is free, take your computer to a couple of businesses to find out if the diagnosis is the same.
